Statement from Jamarr Brown, Color Of Change PAC Executive Director, on the First Presidential Debate Between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

Following last night’s presidential debate, Color Of Change PAC Executive Director Jamarr Brown released the following statement:

Last night, Vice President Kamala Harris stood on the debate stage and gave Americans a preview of what her presidency would look like. We are encouraged to see Kamala Harris lay out clear plans on issues of vital importance to Black voters and families such as economic security, reproductive health, and protecting civil rights and democracy. Vice President Harris focused on an opportunity economy where we all win — from a proposed $6,000 child tax cut to help families to a proposed $50,000 tax deduction for small businesses — strengthening the middle class and ensuring everyone has a chance to succeed. She will do this while maintaining accountability for big businesses and corporations.

While Vice President Harris showed she will protect democracy, Trump once again refused to acknowledge the outcome of the election and showed a complete lack of regret over the January 6 riot. Vice President Harris showed that her victory will lead us to the democracy and progress we deserve.

She displayed a passionate commitment to maintaining reproductive rights for everyone, ensuring all Americans have access to the healthcare they need, while Trump has nothing but lies and an empty promise of a plan concept.

As expected, Donald Trump spouted misinformation, evading real accountability for the harm he has caused to America. He continues to take credit for Biden-era reforms that helped Black families, while trying to paint the Biden/Harris administration as bad for Black people. He says he wants to protect our communities, but we know he wants to give police blanket immunity for anything they do, and was recently endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police. While Trump claims he will reduce crime under his administration, unchecked police power is what actually puts Black communities in danger.

We know our rights and our freedoms will always be in jeopardy when candidates like Trump use their position of power to uphold white supremacy, shield the rich from the law, and use false narratives and misinformation to incite division. His debate rhetoric also makes clear that despite attempting to denounce it, Project 2025 will in fact guide many of his policy priorities if he is re-elected president. The white supremacist roadmap aims to change life as we know it, dismantling democratic systems and turning back the clock on progressive initiatives that have helped millions of Black people over the past sixty years.

Black voters will prevent extremism and Project 2025 policies and continue to fight for progress by harnessing the power of our vote to ensure a future that doesn’t look like our past. It was Black voters who defeated Trump in 2020, and when we work together, we can do it again by electing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz this November.
