Incumbent Katherine Fernandez Rundle Holds on to Prosecutor Seat

National Justice Group Calls On Fernandez Rundle to Fight for Progressive Change

Following the final results of the race for the State Attorney seat in Miami-Dade County, Florida, Arisha Hatch, Executive Director of Color Of Change PAC, released the following statement:

“Our fight against State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle’s racist and biased policies does not end here. We will use Melba Pearson’s strong platform to hold Fernandez accountable for police brutality and inhumane sentencing protocols.

Melba Pearson would have brought progressive change to Miami-Dade County’s criminal justice system by holding police officers and public officials accountable, prioritizing rehabilitation to address the root causes of criminal behavior disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline through policies to keep kids out of the adult prisons, increasing pretrial services to divert people away from jail and ending unnecessary prosecution of small marijuana possession.

Color Of Change PAC, the political action committee of the nation’s largest online racial justice group recently endorsed Melba Pearson. Over the past several months, Color Of Change PAC ran a virtual grassroots voter contact program centered in Black joy and building long-lasting relationships with Black voters through dozens of virtual events, including trainings, phone banks and text-a-thons with more than 2,377 volunteer shifts in Florida. Color Of Change PAC’s member and volunteer efforts yielded hundreds of phone calls and over 53,000 peer-to-peer text messages in Miami-Dade County.

With the tragedies of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor bringing more visibility to police violence and systemic injustice, Color Of Change PAC’s goal to shift how the public views prosecutors and how prosecutors do their jobs is even more salient. Many of the barriers to racial justice in this country, particularly those who hold power, are more evident now than ever. Prosecutors are mostly white and male, and nearly 85 percent run for district attorney positions completely unopposed. With this endorsement and others like it, Color Of Change PAC continues its tradition of endorsing district attorney candidates offering plans that can help move Black people forward.”
