Color Of Change PAC Congratulates Satana Deberry on Primary Victory for Durham County DA

DURHAM COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA — District Attorneys are the most powerful people in our criminal justice system, so electing progressive District Attorneys is an important step in the national call for criminal justice reforms. Following the primary victory of Satana Deberry on her re-election bid for Durham County District Attorney, Color Of Change PAC — the Political Action Committee focused on building independent Black political power, amplifying Black voices, electing candidates who share our values, and holding them accountable to our communities — released the below statement from Executive Director Arisha Hatch:

“Satana Deberry has been a leading advocate for reforming the criminal legal system in Durham County, and her primary victory is a testament to the power of the progressive DA movement,” said Arisha Hatch, Executive Director of Color Of Change PAC. “This is a win for our members who have been mobilizing for weeks leading up to election day. This is a win for Black communities who turned out to vote for a candidate with an unwavering commitment to reform. Deberry’s track record speaks for itself, which is why Color Of Change PAC was proud to endorse her for re-election. We’re excited to see Deberry continue her critical work to deliver much-needed change to Durham County’s legal system while prioritizing the safety of all county citizens.”

Throughout her term, Deberry has reduced reliance on cash bail and cut the population of the county’s detention facility in half. Not only has she prioritized community safety while championing justice reform policies, but has also restored trust in the DA office. Deberry’s work to clear the misdemeanor convictions of nearly 400 people, increase restorative justice practices, and address root causes of violence underscores her dedication to ending criminal justice policies that harm Black people.

Here are a few of the statistics about Color Of Change PAC’s work to support Satana Deberry’s re-election:

  • 4,287 calls made to voters
  • 48,475 texts sent to voters
  • 270,340 emails sent to educate voters and GOTV
  • 47,820 direct mail pieces sent to Black voters and members

Since 2016, Color Of Change PAC has mobilized hundreds of thousands of Black voters across the country, endorsing candidates who champion reform policies that work to transform the justice system. The PAC has also worked to push back against the narrative that electing progressive district attorneys has led to increasing crime in cities, as there is no correlation or evidence that links progressive DAs to rising crime.

In total, Color Of Change PAC made 6.65 million voter contacts in 2020, and has bigger plans to elect progressive district attorneys and ensure that Black communities across the country have the information and resources they need to turn out and vote in the pivotal 2022 election cycle.
