Color Of Change PAC Calls on Lorrin Freeman to Deliver Progressive Reform Policies to Wake County

WAKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA — District Attorneys are the most powerful people in our criminal justice system, so electing progressive District Attorneys is an important step in the national call for reforms to our criminal legal system. Following Lorrin Freeman’s primary victory in the Wake County District Attorney election, Color Of Change PAC — the political action committee of the nation’s largest online racial justice organization — released the following statement from Executive Director Arisha Hatch:

“Color Of Change PAC was proud to endorse Damon Chetson for Wake County District Attorney. Throughout his campaign, he championed reform policies that would bring much-needed change to Wake County’s legal system,” said Arisha Hatch, Executive Director at Color Of Change PAC. “While his loss is disappointing, Color Of Change PAC engaged hundreds of Black voters around progressive issues and will continue to mobilize our members to hold Lorrin Freeman accountable. Black communities in Wake County deserve a District Attorney who will fight to end criminal justice policies that harm us, and we hope that Lorrin Freeman meets this moment with the urgency required to ensure the well-being of Black people in Wake County and beyond.”

In the month leading up to the primary, Color Of Change PAC made the below to support Damon Chetson:

  • 6,075 calls made to voters
  • 148,500 texts sent to voters
  • 224,861 emails sent to educate voters and GOTV
  • 102, 052 direct mail pieces sent to Black voters and members

Since 2016, Color Of Change PAC has mobilized hundreds of thousands of Black voters across the country, endorsing candidates who champion reform policies that work to transform the justice system. The PAC has also worked to push back against the narrative that electing progressive district attorneys has led to increasing crime in cities, as there is no correlation or evidence that links progressive DAs to rising crime.

In total, Color Of Change PAC made 6.65 million voter contacts in 2020, and has bigger plans to elect progressive district attorneys and ensure that Black communities across the country have the information and resources they need to turn out and vote in the pivotal 2022 election cycle.
