Ahead of 2024 Elections, Color Of Change PAC Announces Endorsements in Georgia
Through our commitment to elect progressive candidates who will support Black communities, Color Of Change PAC endorses Shalena Cook Jones and Deborah Gonzalez
GEORGIA — Color Of Change PAC, the political action committee of the nation’s largest online racial justice group, announced its endorsement of Shalena Cook Jones for Chatham County District Attorney and Deborah Gonzalez for Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney. Between now and Election Day, Color Of Change PAC will mobilize Georgia’s Black voters to elect these reform-minded candidates focused on building racial equity for Black communities. Color Of Change PAC is also endorsing candidates in Texas, Ohio, Florida and California.
“Color Of Change PAC is proud to endorse candidates who understand that engaging Black voters and fighting for racial justice isn’t just a one-off action on the campaign trail. Shalena Cook Jones and Deborah Gonzalez are working to build racial equity, and we will mobilize Black voters to support them,” said Color Of Change PAC spokesperson Rashad Robinson. “This cycle, the preservation of our democracy and the economic advancement of Black and other historically marginalized communities are top of mind. Both of those issues are impacted by the justice system. Prosecutors are the most powerful single actors in the criminal justice system, and support of reform-minded prosecutors is an investment in racial equity that touches many aspects of our lives.”
Since 2016, Color Of Change PAC has engaged hundreds of thousands of Black voters across the country, endorsing candidates who offer plans to help move Black people forward.
Gonzalez has spent her career working in the community on issues such as criminal justice, racial disparities, restorative justice, and juvenile development. Over the past few years, she has had several major accomplishments including decreasing the court backlog, expanding victim services, finding alternative solutions for non-violent or non-repeat offenses, and addressing historic inequities by participating in records restriction events, creating alternative solutions for at-risk youth, and spearheading several restorative justice or resentencing efforts.
During her tenure, Cook instituted early intervention programs aimed at at-risk youth, providing support and resources to prevent their involvement in the criminal justice system. She also led initiatives that streamlined processes and ensured more efficient delivery of justice, keeping Black defendants from lingering in the system. She established and managed an Early Case Resolution Program, which successfully resolved thousands of cases before they entered the criminal court system.
With renewed energy and excitement around the 2024 election, Color of Change PAC will support its endorsed candidates with voter engagement and mobilization, communicating the importance of both local and national elections to Black voters and conveying that voting for candidates focused on racial equity at the local level will empower candidates at the top of the ticket. Color Of Change PAC is one of the first political organizing groups to perfect the ability to reach and engage Black voters through actions like text and phone banking, virtual squad meetings and more. Color Of Change PAC will also utilize direct mail, digital ads, and email and SMS broadcasts.
